2010 excessive oil consumption

Greetings: I have a 2010 Titan that started to eat massive quantities of engine oil at around 12K to 15K miles - oil level would drop off the dipstick completely between changes. Dealer has monitored level several times and finally wound up replacing short block of engine with OK from Nissan. the only outward sign of excessive consumption is a puff of blue smoke when starting cold engine. It seems to be consuming oil again AFTER short block replacment.
Has anyone else heard about this sort of issue on 2010's or earlier years? Any ideas on what could be going on?
