Lessons of History and Hope: Commemorating the Liberation of Auschwitz at Farnham College

In marking Holocaust Memorial Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, we reflect on a poignant event we hosted in December, when we had the honour of welcoming guest speaker, Gabriel Stein, to Farnham College. Gabriel shared with us the story of his mother, Marie, and her family, who survived the Holocaust.

Delivering a powerful and deeply moving presentation, Gabriel shared his family’s story through compelling videos of his mother. In these recordings, made later in her life, she vividly recounted her childhood experiences in the Nazi ghetto of Łódź, Poland.

We were delighted to welcome groups of students from four local schools—Broadwater, Eggar’s, Heath End, and Kings College—alongside current students from Farnham College to listen to Gabriel’s talk. Among them, two Farnham College students, Fabian and Izzie, shared their personal experiences of a recent visit to Auschwitz. Representing Farnham College as part of the Holocaust Educational Trust, they spoke about what they learned and the profound impact the visit had on them.

Gabriel joined us on behalf of Generation2Generation, a Holocaust charity dedicated to empowering second- and third-generation descendants of Holocaust survivors to share their family histories. Through these presentations, the charity seeks to educate diverse audiences, inspire future generations, and promote the values of inclusivity and human rights.

Rupert Sheard, A Level Sociology and History tutor at Farnham College, said: “We were thrilled to welcome students from our partner schools in Surrey and Hampshire to commemorate 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz.

“Through powerful testimony and thoughtful reflection, students gained valuable insights into the lessons of intolerance and the enduring message of hope.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to Generation2Generation and Gabriel Stein for their contribution to this important event at Farnham College. We are confident that everyone in the audience will carry the impact of this talk with them for a long time to come.”
